We’ve been in a great position lately, merrily recruiting some of the UK’s rising SEO stars. So first-off, a big welcome to the guys that have joined us over the last few weeks and months: Tahera, Mike, Carolyn, Noel, Matt B and Matt H.
With the vast growth of the SEO team, now running at 10 SEO’s (and still looking for more Manchester SEOs), we wanted to make provisions to ensure that the quality of learning and professional development is maintained.
As such, we’ve been hard at work of late building a new training scheme for the raft of SEO’s that have joined the Mediaedge:cia SEO team: the MEC SEO Academy.
MEC SEO Academy: Shared Knowledge
All search marketers know that in this ultra-fast paced world of digital, it takes only a second to miss developments that could have huge ramifications for the search industry. Never has there been an industry like it (slight exaggeration)!
On these grounds, at the very foundation of the MEC SEO Academy is the understanding that no one person is expected to know all, do all or train all. This means that each person helps to share and advocate their specialism across the team, and in doing this becomes a true specialist in their field.
This specialism might range from link-bait to video optimisation, web technology to search technology, accessibility to SEO copywriting. This provides the huge benefit of empowering each person with a specialist area of which they can demonstrate exceptional expertise. This reduces the chance of people having only a surface level of SEO knowledge, and instead promotes cutting-edge learning and development right across the team. Each of the guys in the team then act as a sort of ‘SEO watchtower’ – looking out for new ideas, tests, and becoming the go-to person for specialist questions.
SEO Mentors
To ensure that people keep on top and ahead of the SEO game, each person is assigned an SEO mentor who is responsible for their training and development. It is not necessarily a more senior member of staff, but someone that is going to promote and challenge the other person’s development. This helps promote a sort of shared responsibility for the progression of the SEO team, while at the same time recognising that teaching another person helps to articulate day-to-day SEO issues and helps to instil that knowledge in their own mind.
Talking about and presenting SEO
SEO is still an emerging digital marketing art form. Even the basics are far too often misunderstood, so ensuring that each team member is exposed to the very best advice and training at the earliest possible opportunity will help them to educate others around them and the clients they support.
This starts with 6 core modules – regularly revised to consider the latest thinking – and delivered to the SEO team in an interactive way so as to promote the sharing of the greatest thinking.
