Media can often be described as a circus, however, experiencing the skills from inside one was exactly what we did for our Manchester company away day. The Manchester team went over to the Broughton Park Rugby Club where a big top was set up on one of the pitches.
Our company mission is to be our clients’ most valued business partner, famous for inspiring people and exceptional results, however, in order for us to achieve this sometimes we need to push and challenge ourselves. In the summer of 2014 MEC developed a new mantra ‘Don’t just live THRIVE’ where we are able to push our passion, imagination and limits. We discovered it’s only through exploring new experiences and skills that we can let new ideas and creativity flourish.
Much more than just clowning around for the day, Circus Sensible were on hand to teach us all new tricks in the form of circus skills. Through learning a unique mix of skills everyone was challenged to learn new skills individually and as teams.
Everyone came away confident they had learned something new giving a renewed energy and inspiration to the offices.
Below are just some of the new skills we learned:
Juggling - A skill that can be a metaphor for many aspects of life. While learning how to juggle we found out some techniques behind picking up new skills, such as breaking down a task from the beginning. In this case starting with scarfs and moving up to weighted balls. Learning how to juggle taught us how to cope with failure and many of us gained valuable lessons in not giving up!
Diablo - – Diablo is an ancient Chinese circus skill, similar to a spinning top. The skill of diablo is in precision and timing, therefore, to be successful clear communication is crucial.
Poi - learning how to spin poi taught us how to use different thought processes and how to multitask effectively. The poi taught us coordination and balance, and when we got the hang of it smoothness, grace and ‘flow’.
And even though uni-cycling is very hard to master in a day, our deputy MD Emma just about got the hang of it. Our away day concluded with food and drinks in the evening at the Black Dog Ballroom NWS.
