It’s that time of year where we have to say goodbye to some of the wonderful media trainees we’ve had with us and we thought it would be nice to find out how they’ve fared during their time at MEC. Here, two of our latest temporary recruits, Oliver Kristall and Hayley Stoddart share their experiences of 12 months with us.
Oliver Kristall
“Before beginning my placement at MEC, all I knew was that I was joining a highly respectable media agency. What I was unaware of was just how unique and exciting the company really was and how fascinating I would find the industry as a whole.
I’ve gained so much in the past 12 months, from basic knowledge to deeper insight. I’ve learnt what working full-time is all about and that, if you’re lucky enough to land a job at a company like MEC, there are enormous opportunities available.
As a member of the display activation team, I’ve learnt how to book ads for magazines and newspapers as well negotiating tactics to help bring costs down. I’ve worked on huge clients like Shearings, National Holidays, Vimto and the BBC, as well as being the day-to-day contact for SPAR leaflet distribution – just a few of many tasks I’ve undertaken that have made it an amazing year.
As well as waking up and looking forward to another day in the office, MEC has provided a great social environment and platform for personal development. During my time, I’ve also passed the IPA Foundation Exam, which I can use whatever I choose to do in my career and for this I’m incredibly grateful to the company.
I’ll remember MEC for its great work, vibrant atmosphere and friendly people. I’ve had a superb year and can only hope I’m as happy through my whole working life as I’ve been in the last 12 months.”
Hayley Stoddart
When I began applying for placements, I knew I was keen to work for a diverse and reputable company. So, when the option of working for one of the biggest media agencies in the world came up, it was clearly an amazing opportunity I just couldn’t miss!
What I love about MEC is the fact that from the start I was treated like a full time member of the team. I believe responsibility and accountability is one of the best things you can get out of an internship, and is certainly something every intern gets at MEC.
During the year, I’ve learnt to create, optimise and analyse PPC, video and display campaigns effectively. I’ve made use of a variety of systems and my computing skills have improved, as has my ability to time manage, meet deadlines and produce industry standard work. I’ve made lots of friends around the business and have made lots of memories from different social events; it’s definitely a welcoming, friendly atmosphere to work in.
The placement exceeded my expectations on many occasions and outside of my daily tasks I had the opportunity to gain insight into the different departments across the business, attend brainstorming sessions, plan charity and staff events with the lovely mediator team as well as the opportunity to take the IPA Foundation Exam which was fantastic for deepening my knowledge of Media and is an achievement I can carry with me for life.
The biggest highlight of my time at MEC was definitely the trip to Nice. The Apprentice-style team building task was fun but challenging and a great chance to network with the London team. The tasks certainly helped develop my team building and negotiation skills and as a vice captain I had the chance to lead, make final decisions with the captain as well as motivate other team members.
The movie set awards ball was incredible! Red carpets, paparazzi, canapés and cocktails, but the real highlight was seeing some of the most impressive campaigns brought to life and seeing everyone’s hard work awarded. The evening definitely helped to clarify why MEC is one of the leading agencies.
My internship at MEC has enhanced my career prospects considerably. I’ve gained a great insight into media and developed many transferable skills and has certainly reinforced my decision to continue working in the media industry.
Thanks for the invaluable opportunity MEC!!
