Next Generation Outdoor Formats
A recent article regarding the future of outdoor advertising has outlined the many new technologies which could potentially transform the medium into one of the most targeted around. As such, we've provided a summary of the ones we feel are among the most exciting...
Face Recognition Technology - Using cameras placed behind posters, this technology can register the age, sex and even mood of people passing by. This way, clients can supply multiple creative executions and more accurately target their campaigns.
Augmented Outdoor Mobile App - Hidden content and rewards on poster sites, made visible thanks to the latest cameraphone technology.
Clic2C Technology - Again using cameraphones, consumers engage with specially created posters - but here, they are linked automatically to a specified mobile website.
Moderated Live Streaming - Social networking comments from sites like Twitter and Facebook, moderated and streamed to individual out-of-home screens.
Magic Mirror Screens - Situated in-store, these allow shoppers to see what they would look like if they were 'wearing' various items of clothing from the rack - reducing the amount of time and space used for changing rooms.
MEC Opinion: These emerging technologies are hugely exciting. If they can be implemented well, they’ll offer a whole new level of targeting and interaction for outdoor advertisers.
One concern, however, is just how long it will be before they are made available nationwide. We would expect testing to be localised within the Greater London area, but believe the true potential of these innovations will only be fulfilled once rolled out across the country - as they can then obtain mass coverage in a truly targeted and interactive way.
