New Year, new station launches

It seems January is the month to launch or rebrand in the commercial radio sector, with two of the major UK groups undertaking changes this week.

The much hyped rebrand from the Global-owned Galaxy Network to Capital took place on the January 3rd, with 6 Galaxy stations across Manchester, Birmingham, North East, Central Scotland, South Coast and Yorkshire all assuming the London station's moniker. A national TV campaign was launched to support the rebrand, featuring key Capital artists such as Usher and Rihanna.

Elsewhere, GMG has expanded its station portfolio this week, extending coverage of Real Radio in South Wales to cover the Midlands and North, in effect providing a commercial radio opportunity for advertisers across the whole of Wales.

MEC Opinion: The major effect of the Galaxy rebrand to Capital is likely to be felt by owner Global themselves. In rebranding a group of stations relatively low on the priority list with agencies (particularly in London) to a very familiar format in the shape of Capital, Global are hoping to generate higher revenue for what will now be a 'familiar' pseudo-national network. While this will bring the network to the attention of national advertisers, it remains to be seen if the Capital name will sit well with listeners outside of London.

GMG extending the reach of Real Radio is a welcome development - previously advertisers could only look to a Rajar-ed station option for South Wales or the North Coast. Advertisers will still be able to utilise spot advertising on South Wales alone if required.
