It's Not That Grim Up North

With the BBC’s move to Salford Quays fast approaching, it has been revealed that approximately 54% of BBC workers are refusing to move up North. This has led to a debate about whether the region is really the right place for the BBC to deliver product while creating a happy home for its workers.

In his rather silly article featured on the London Evening Standard website on the September 13th, Stephen Robinson used the recent cricket betting scandal to argue that anything of any importance - whether sporting or political - only ever happens in London.

MEC: Robinson's piece completely ignores the North West's regular hosting of major sporting events and high profile political conferences. Other than displaying a complete lack of news reporting skills, his article suggests Salford Quays will only offer Londoners misery - and a Burger King.

However, TGI data shows 24.6% of North West residents are very happy with their lives - compared to 20.4% of those living in the capital. Additionally, Londoners eating at Burger King in the last 12 months over index at 120.6, while their north-western neighbours register much lower at 86.9. All in all, we believe BBC staff will find it really isn't so 'grim up north'.
